Let’s Review

As the team assembled for their regularly scheduled meeting, Blake joined them for the first agenda item—the debrief from his visit with Kim and Gary.

Charles was glad Blake had joined them so he could thank him publicly. He also thought it might be a good time to share a little more of his story.

“You guys may not realize what an amazing company you are creating. I am guessing few CEOs would give a day to cover for a consultant to spend a day with his family. This is a testimony to how much Blake values people and how much he believes in creating a leadership culture. His willingness to personally make a benchmarking trip rather than just ask us to do it for him sends a strong signal to the entire organization. Blake, thank you again.”

Charles took a deep breath and continued. “The time with my family means more to me than you know. When we first met, I told you I was in recovery. . . .”

“How’s that going?” Rose asked.

“Great. Thanks for asking.” Charles hesitated and then said, “What I didn’t tell you on that first day is that my wife died a few months ago, and because of my addiction and my rehab program, my daughter, Samantha, has been living with my parents. She’s four years old.”

Kim, in shock from Charles’s revelation said, “Your wife died?”

“Yes, and losing her combined with not seeing Sam very much made the day last week with her even more valuable to me.”

“Why didn’t you tell us about your wife in the first meeting?” Rose asked.

“I was scared you would feel sorry for me, maybe more than you already did. The alcohol thing seemed like enough; that’s all I was ready to share.”

“Why now?” Gary asked.

“It didn’t take long for me to trust you guys. I can see your hearts—the way you work with each other. You really do care. I guess I really need some of that care to come my way.” He offered a faint smile. “It’s been really hard,” Charles confessed.

“Where is your daughter now?” Gary asked.

“Back with my folks.”

“When will you see her again?” Kim asked.

“I’m not sure, but soon, I hope. My plan is for us to rebuild our lives together. I just have a few details and a few more issues to resolve.”

“Thanks for sharing this with us. We will help any way we can,” Bob added.

“I appreciate that. For now, let’s create a leadership culture.” Charles shifted the team’s attention to their agenda. “Today, let’s see what we learned in our visits. Because Blake can only be with us for the beginning of our meeting, we’ll start with your visit with Chad.”

Gary looked around the table and said, “I think I have been ‘voluntold’ to represent our group. Guys, jump in if you have anything to add.

“We met with Chad Freeman, head of Operations for a very successful company, and leadership development is a real priority for them. The promise of personal growth enticed Chad to join the company over a decade ago.
