Billy and I went to grammar school together and, without a doubt, he is one of the greatest bass players of all time. He is the Hendrix or Van Halen of bass guitar. I had represented Billy while he was a member of a Buffalo band called Talas, and, in 1986, he had just joined the David Lee Roth Band. He wanted me to move to Los Angeles to be closer to him and the music industry generally. I reached out to people I knew in the business about looking for work in LA. One of those people, Jon Sutherland, was the press person at Metal Blade Records and also a writer who had done some great press pieces on Billy in the past. He mentioned me to Brian Slagel, and the first time I ever met Brian was on the phone. It took three phone calls, and the deal was done. The final deal point was that it was December in LA, and the sun was shining. I was in Buffalo, zero degrees and snowing. Sold!
